Every now and then, a famous actor, comedian or athlete is spotted in the Capital Region. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's always headline news.

Add another former athlete to the list of Capital Region tourists, as a long-time member of the New York Yankees' organization was recently spotted at DeFazio's Pizzeria in Troy.

He even stopped to take a photo, which was then posted on the official DeFazio's Facebook page:

The gentleman on the right is none other than Joe Girardi, former catcher and manager of the New York Yankees. Girardi played in Major League Baseball from 1989 to 2003, and spent four seasons (1996-1999) with the Yankees.

Girardi was extremely successful during his stint in The Bronx, to say the least. He won three World Series championships with the franchise in four years, and served as the catcher for both Dwight Gooden's no-hitter and David Cone's perfect game.

Soon after his playing career ended, Girardi returned to the dugout as a coach with the Yankees. After leaving to manage the Florida Marlins for one season, Girardi returned again, and was named the 34th manager of the New York Yankees ahead of the 2008 season.

Girardi managed the Yankees from 2008 through 2017, winning a World Series in 2009. After his stint with New York, he then spent three years (2020-2022) at the helm of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The long-time Yankee clearly has good taste, as he visited DeFazio's Pizzeria, which has attracted a number of notable names over the years. That list of names includes Barstool Sports' founder Dave Portnoy, who raved about the pizza (and hangover cake) at this Troy, NY establishment.

Portnoy even included DeFazio's in his inaugural pizza festival in 2023.

DeFazio's has locations on 4th Street in Troy, and on Livingston Ave in Albany. The Troy location is open Monday through Saturday from 11AM - 9:30PM. Click here to visit their website for more information, or to place an online order.
