Historic Troy Theatre Set To Return With Capital Region’s Largest Movie Screen
The city of Troy, New York is making what's old, new again. The American Theater, located on River Street, is being renovated into what will become a state-of-the-art movie theater as well as a live performance venue.
According to New York's Empire State Development team, the $7.1 million dollar renovation of this century-old former cinema, in downtown Troy, is expected to reimagine the theater experience.

It has been reported that film producers for the horror movie franchise 'The Conjuring' have been utilizing Troy's American Theatre to film scenes for the latest release in the series. If you notice a new marquee, it's for the movie, not part of the renovation.

The historic American Theater has been sitting vacant on River Street for several decades. With the renovation, the 1920s-era venue will become a new single-screen movie theater with opportunities for additional performances in partnership with the Proctors Collaborative.
Proctors Collaborative, which operates Proctors in Schenectady, Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany, and Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs, is overseeing the historical restoration of the building. The exterior marquee is being replaced to match the venue's original signage, along with the interior ticket lobby.
The auditorium proportions are being maintained, with 200 reclining style movie seats, as well as ample flat for areas for special needs and non-reclining chairs. The screen will be the largest in the Capital Region at 44 feet wide, with sound through a Dolby Atmos system.
