Beer and pretzels are a match made in heaven. Right here in the Capital Region we happen to have a great occasion for you to enjoy both. I'm talking about Saratoga Beer Summit happening in February.

While I'll never say no to a bowl of pretzels, having your own in a crowd like that is a little better. Plus let's not spread any unwanted germs. This is why a pretzel necklace is the best option for you. Keeps it right near you for easy consuming. So why do we do it? It's apparently a 500 year old tradition, according to Wine Enthusiast.

As beer became more and more popular, bakers started to realize they had all the ingredients to make beer as well as bread. Bakers in Germany, especially in Bavaria, started making beer alongside pretzels. That’s where the marriage of the two things came together.

Building a pretzel necklace is more than just putting a bunch of them on a string and calling it a day. You've got to construct it with love and care, especially when putting one together for others.

The above video has the right idea when it comes to making a pretzel necklace. Variety is key and adding in several types of pretzels will keep you happy as you sample your way through a beer festival. The dark pretzels are my personal favorite, so when you see me up at Saratoga Beer Summit I'll have myself some of those.

There are some who have gone beyond just a standard pretzel necklace, but I don't think you need to overthink it. I also think that hard pretzels are the way to go for this. I have seen some people with soft pretzels but I think that's too heavy for drinking. I want something hard and crunchy to both munch on and cleanse my pallet.
