Nearly 15,000 New York Nurses Go on Strike After Contract Talks Collapse
Nearly 15,000 nurses across New York City walked off the job today, launching one of the largest healthcare strikes the state has seen in years. The nurses, represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), say they were left with no choice after contract talks with major hospital systems broke down.
Why Are They On Strike?
According to the New York State AFL-CIO, the strike is about more than pay.
Union leaders say hospital management has put profits ahead of patients and staff, calling the hospital systems “greedy” for refusing to agree to staffing levels and safety measures nurses say are essential to doing their jobs properly
Nurses say understaffing has pushed them to the breaking point, forcing them to care for too many patients at once and increasing the risk of mistakes and burnout. They are also demanding better pay and stronger protections against workplace violence, which has become a growing concern in hospitals.
Which Hospitals Does it Affect?
The walkout includes nurses at several of the region’s biggest hospital networks, including Mount Sinai, Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and multiple NewYork-Presbyterian locations. Picket lines went up early this morning outside hospitals from Upper Manhattan to the Bronx, with nurses and supporters calling for safer working conditions and fair contracts.
Hospitals say they are bringing in temporary nurses to keep facilities running, and patients are still being urged to seek emergency care when needed. However, some non-emergency appointments and procedures could be delayed.
Could Upstate New York be Next?
Right now, there is no indication that this nurses' strike is spreading to Upstate New York, as the current walkout is tied specifically to contract negotiations between the New York State Nurses Association and several large hospital systems in New York City.
That said, Upstate nurses share many of the same concerns over staffing, pay, and safety, and New York has seen hospital strikes outside the city before.
