New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) wants you to be aware of many different scams that are circulating throughout the state. There isn't just one way these scammers are trying to get your money or information, there are many to look for.

NYSEG is raising awareness about scams, especially as spring brings a surge in fraudulent activities. Christine Alexander, VP of Customer Service, advises customers to stay vigilant. If anything seems fishy with a caller or visitor, don't hesitate to contact customer service for verification.

According to WKBW, to help customers spot scams, they've outlined some key warning signs. Their employees won't make unexpected visits to your home, snap photos of your bills, or push you to sign up for services or discounts. They also won't ask for payment via prepaid debit cards or other non-refundable methods.

These scams come in various forms, like threats of service disconnection unless immediate payment is made, requests for cash or prepaid cards to cover meter costs, or claims of payment glitches requiring additional payments.

To protect yourself, report any suspected scams to local authorities. Familiarize yourself with NYSEG's payment policies. They never ask for payments via prepaid debit cards and offer multiple payment options.

What If You Are Unsure If It's A Scam?

If you're ever unsure about a call or visit, hang up or close the door and contact the utility company directly using the information on your bill or their website. Always ask for ID from anyone claiming to be from NYSEG and be cautious of links in emails requesting payments.

Consider enrolling in AutoPay for added convenience and peace of mind. With payments automatically deducted from your bank account each month, you can rest assured your bills are paid on time, without falling prey to scams.
