Farmers’ Almanac Winter Forecast: “Tricky” Season Ahead For NY

There has been a lot of talk in the last few weeks about a Super El Niño developing over the Pacific Ocean and how it could impact winter weather across the nation.

The prevailing forecast for the season ahead is that an El Niño will lead to a milder and wetter winter for most. But some forecasters think it could lead to heavier snowfall for a handful of states, including New York. Now we can add another respected forecast to the 'more snow' list.

Farmers' Almanac Predicts 'Tricky' Winter For the Northeast

The weather experts at the Farmers' Almanac have released their forecast for winter 2026-27 and used one key word to describe what lies ahead: "tricky." They say the Northeast overall will deal with "complicated winter patterns."

This will translate into more rain and a wintry mix of precipitation, while inland areas (Here's pointing at you, Upstate New York) "...may be hit by several rounds of heavy, wet snow—particularly during January and February." The Almanac says how much snow we get will all come down to "...small shifts in storm tracks and temperatures."

This past winter featured some of the coldest temperatures we have seen in years here in the Capital Region, leading to a pretty solid total snowfall for the season. According to the National Weather Service, Albany got 58.4 inches of snow - just a tick under our seasonal average of 59.2 inches.

Based on the predictions we have seen so far, heavy snow will not be a sure thing this year - but if the conditions hit right, a wetter-than-normal season could create the perfect conditions for some big snowmakers.
