Measles is Back

According to a report by the New York state Department of Health, there have been a total of 27 confirmed cases of Measles in the state, with 21 of those coming from Upstate New York.

The Department of Health is monitoring the situation very closely, and has directed local health departments to each county in order to take preventative and protective measures, as well as investigating the disease and its spread in order to prevent it further.

What to Know About Measles

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that causes rash and fever. The disease spreads through coughing or sneezing into the air, and it can be caught simply by breathing in the virus or touching an infected surface.

The Department of Health states that the best way to prevent the disease is to get the measles vaccine (2 valid doses of MMR vaccine). Children are the most at risk, and it is recommended to get them vaccinated at 12-15 months, and then once again at 4-6 years.

At the moment, there is no treatment for the disease, but acetaminophen and ibuprofen may be taken to reduce a fever. Bed rest and plenty of fluids are also recommended to ease the symptoms.
