New York Braces For ‘Life-Threatening’ Cold This Week
This weekend's snowstorm is the start of New York state's most brutal stretch of frigid winter weather of the season.
At press time, it was about 20 degrees and snowing in the Capital Region. A couple of days from now, this will seem like a walk in the park.
This month has lived up to forecasters' prediction that it will be our coldest January since 2011. So far it has certainly felt cold!
Now it looks like the first half of the month was all just a warm-up, or maybe we should say cool-down, for the extreme temperatures that await this week.
Accuweather Says 'Life-Threatening' Cold To Descend Across The US
According to Accuweather, "...the coldest air so far this winter will plague the Central and East this week, plunging temperatures below zero for an extended period of time for some cities." Frigid conditions will last through the middle of the week, with what Accuweather calls 'downright dangerous' and record-breaking temperatures for some.
How Cold Will It Get In New York?
While daytime highs Monday through Wednesday are expected to reach the teens, Accuweather says earlier morning lows Monday will be in the single digits, and with the wind chill will feel as low as -20 in Upstate New York and those who work outside "...will have to take extra measures to protect themselves against the bitter cold into midweek."
Governor Hochul updated New Yorkers Sunday on the incoming cold saying "These conditions pose an extraordinary risk to anyone who is exposed to the elements or is unable to adequately heat their home, and I encourage New Yorkers to take precautions to keep themselves and their families safe."
While we in New York are prepared to deal with such cold weather, Accuweather says elsewhere that it can seriously affect businesses, farmers, and energy suppliers.
