Capital Region Shut Down Over 7 Inches?! Not When WE Were Kids
When We Were Kids....
Well, the Capital Region is in the midst of our first significant snowstorm of the year. When it's all said and done, we may get a whopping 7 inches of snow, and if you looked around this morning, you’d think we were in the middle of a 3-day blizzard and the National Guard was rolling in on tanks.
I get it: safety first, but still...
Back in our day, a snow day meant grabbing a shovel, knocking on the nearest old lady’s door, and earning five bucks and a hot cocoa. Kids today? Their parents order DoorDash for them while they sit at home playing video games.
Every. Single. School. Closed.
Shen, Colonie, Saratoga, Albany, Schenectady, Troy; they all tapped out, many of them made the call on Monday night.
Meanwhile, every adult in the Capital Region (besides teachers) got up early to brush off the car, while white-knuckling it to work, questioning all the life choices.

When I was growing up, schools didn’t shut down this fast, even when we got 10 inches, let alone 7. Kids today get a snow day because someone heard a sidewalk might be slippery.
You Haven't Lived Unless You Wore Galoshes
And at the risk of sounding like “back in my day / get off my lawn” guy, but do kids even know what galoshes are anymore?
We wore those awful rubber shoe covers. You know, the ones your mom had to pry on with two hands and a prayer. The ones that made your feet smell like wet tires, and we waddled to Public School 16 in Albany like Michelin Men, and nobody felt sorry for us.
Pure Childhood Pain
Kids today have no idea how easy things are. They wake up to a text message while grown-ups are still sliding into work like we’re auditioning for the Winter Olympics.
Who remembers sitting in front of the radio at 5 in the morning, listening to an endless list of school closings, praying for your district’s name, only to learn that Ichabod Crane and every rival school got a snow day while YOU got a two-hour delay.
So enjoy the day off, kiddos, there really is nothing like a snow day! The rest of us adults will be out there shoveling, slipping, scraping, and struggling.
With that said, I still was able to duck out of the office about an hour earlier than usual due to "the storm." May even hit up Chick-fil-A on the way home.
