The man killed in Sunday's plane crash near Piseco Airport in the Adirondacks is being remembered as a dedicated leader, mentor, teacher, and friend whose impact reached far beyond aviation.

The Civil Air Patrol's New York Wing confirmed the death of Colonel Kenneth Andreu, the organization's current Southeast Group Commander and former New York Wing Commander.

Investigators say the 74-year-old Valhalla resident was flying his single-engine Cessna from Poughkeepsie to Piseco Airport Sunday evening when the aircraft crashed approximately 150 yards off the runway during its landing approach. Andreu, the only person on board, was killed in the crash.

"Left a Lasting Impact"

In addition to his decades of service with the Civil Air Patrol, he was also a faculty member at Dutchess Community College.

In a statement, the Civic Air Patrol said it was sharing the news "with profound sadness," adding that Colonel Andreu's leadership, dedication, and commitment "left a lasting impact on countless members across New York Wing and beyond."
