New Multi-Million Dollar Transportation Hub Coming to the Capital Region
Whether you’re seeing Schenectady by scooter, car-share, bike, or bus, you’ll soon have a new nucleus for all four and more.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer met reporters at the future site of the Capital District Transit Authority’s Gateway Mobility Hub to announce the $5 million complex coming in 2023.
The site is already laid out between the Artisan Mill District and SUNY Schenectady at the former Adirondack Trailways bus station, which was demolished last year. This announcement was foreshadowed by other recent renovations in the lower State Street and Gateway Plaza area.
The CDTA’s focal point for all forms of public transit, there will be a new emphasis on micro-mobility and alternative transport with racks for e-scooters and an expansion of the CDPHP Cycle! bike share program. For four-wheeled transportation, the Gateway Mobility Hub will contain four electric vehicle charging stations, three bus bays, and two spaces for a new Capital Region car-share service through which users reserve their rental by app. Trailways and Greyhound buses will also use the Hub as a continued pickup spot for their intercity routes and services.
"As we work towards a comprehensive transit network, the Gateway Mobility Hub is a partnership with the county and city that will allow customers, pedestrians, and motorists to move seamlessly throughout the region, especially here in Schenectady, and soon Montgomery County," said CDTA CEO Carm Basile.
Complete with heated sidewalks, CDTA has already secured around $4 million of its funding through last year’s fiercely debated $1.2 trillion federal infrastructure bill.
Senator Schumer also took the opportunity to praise the separate $296 million in federal funds recently raised for CDTA, included $191 million in emergency COVID relief.

The CDTA is now taking bids for the project, with the Hub’s opening scheduled for early next year.
