Traffic is About to get Hellish in Clifton Park, Here’s Why

Back in April of 2021, a truck traveling south on the Northway had a boom lift in tow when the lift raised and struck the Sitterly Road overpass just south of Exit 9. The bridge was heavily damaged and caused major traffic problems around Clifton Park and Halfmoon.

The damage to the bridge was so extensive that it could not be repaired. A new bridge would need to be installed to take its place.

Crews worked diligently for weeks as traffic in the area had to be rerouted, causing problems all over town. Eventually a temporary bridge was put in place.

Starting Monday, work crews will begin to replace the temporary bridge with a permanent structure. This will cause Sitterly Road to be shut down starting Monday April 18 until Friday April 22.

But that's just the beginning. Drivers should expect partial lane closures on the Northway in the upcoming week, although they are trying to keep them out of morning and afternoon drive times. When Sitterly Road reopens, alternating traffic will occur for some time.

On June 18, the DOT says the final bridge replacement will begin, which will shut down the roadway for months. The estimated date for the permanent reopening of the bridge is September 12. After that, some maintenance work will continue and there will be occasions into the fall where traffic will need to alternate over the bridge. There will also be paving taking place, which will cause the bridge to close down for at least two weekends this fall.
