Yankees’ Severino Suffers Setback in Scranton Start
The Luis Severino comeback train has been delayed.
Unfortunately, the news surrounding Severino is actually two-fold. Per MLB.com, the Yankees' right-hander was first scratched from his scheduled start in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. Reports surfaced saying "Sevy" experienced tightness in his right shoulder, which appears to be a separate issue from the Tommy John surgery he is currently recovering from.
The news went from bad to worse over the weekend.

In the MLB.com report, it also stated that Severino would undergo an MRI on his shoulder in New York today. While we have yet to see any updates on the right-hander, the news is nonetheless frustrating, as Severino was steadily working his way through the Yankees' minor league ranks, with the hope of making his first Major League pitching appearance since early 2019.
Thus far in 2021, Severino has a combined four appearances, all of which were considered starts. He threw 2.2 innings for Single-A Tampa, giving up a run. He moved on to High-A Hudson Valley, giving up one run in 1.2 innings. Following those starts, he threw in two games in Double-A Somerset, giving up a combined two runs in 6.1 innings. His trip to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was, hopefully, the final stop before his return to the Bronx.
It's been touch-and-go for the New York Yankees' starting rotation over the past few weeks, and despite all of the turnover, the team continues to win. The team is just 5.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, and 2.5 games behind Boston and Oakland for a wild card position. Gerrit Cole returns to the mound tonight for New York after battling COVID-19, and fellow patient Jordan Montgomery is scheduled to start the second game of tomorrow's doubleheader. Domingo German threw a bullpen session on Saturday, showing positive results, while Corey Kluber made his first rehab start last week.
So, while the rest of the members of the rotation near their return, fans likely won't see Sevy back in pinstripes for a bit longer.
