You may have seen photos on your social media, or perhaps even driven by or live near some of the landmarks throughout the Capital Region that were lit up bright red recently.

When Summer turns to Fall here in Upstate NY, the weather gets cooler, and slowly but surely the leaves start to change colors, making for some beautiful sightlines here in Capital Region.

The answer may surprise you - as it did for me.

I was out of town this weekend, or else I certainly would have noticed the bright red hues emanating from the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany.

According to the NYS DOGS, various landmarks throughout the state were illuminated red in honor of Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters, and the images are as spectacular as they are humbling.

Created in 2017, Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters recognized the 25th anniversary of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.

Since then, Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters has expanded to include fire departments, families lighting their homes in red, as well as the various landmarks that you see taking part.

Light the Night lasts for about a week, and participation happens in the first week of October.
